Rotary switches, which are essentially of identical construction, are often demanded in forms which differ in type, the number of positions or the distance between these positions. In order to obtain the different switch types, it is known to install different indexing link inserts. In order to simplify the installation of the different switch types in the case of rotary switches, the positions of which are determined by an indexing system with an indexing link and a latching element pressed resiliently in a radial direction against the indexing link, one of these two parts being arranged in a contact piece coupled to a turning knob and the other being arranged on the housing, a second indexing link, which differs from the first indexing link, is arranged offset in the axial direction towards the first indexing link and the position of the contact piece in the axial direction is determined by the shape and/or the installation position of the turning knob.
