The process according to the invention is carried out by cutting in the turf two parallel slits, the bottom of which has a changing height. The soil between the two slits is lifted out, and the groove thus formed between the slits is filled with seeds which are deposited at different heights. The slits are made by means of knives which are arranged on the circumference of a drum or of another machine allowing a periodic insertion of the knives. The tools each have a pair of knives which makes the parallel slits, and between the knives extends a cutting edge which permits a cross-cutting in the region of the groove, and this knife of blade-like form can serve at the same time for ejecting the soil. Instead, a clearing tine lifting out the soil can be arranged behind the knives in the running direction.
