A proportional magnet (11) is proposed which has an energising coil (42) and a control coil (43) which is arranged concentrically with respect to the said energising coil and has the same number of turns. Each coil (42, 43) has inherently separate inputs and outputs for the power supply. In consequence, the inductance of the coils (42, 43) can be reduced for the same lifting force, as a result of which the dynamics of the proportional magnet (11) are improved. Since the two coils (42, 43) are supplied by separate power sources, the current flow can be controlled to be both in the same direction and in opposite directions. The lifting force can therefore be controlled at will between zero and an upper maximum value. <IMAGE>
