In a translator in which of the items of input information which are possible as a whole only a portion actually occurs, and in which, in order to reduce the outlay on storage, items of input information are not used as a whole for addressing storage elements but are used a number of times section by section and partially in combination with intermediate results, default succession items of input information, in connection with items of output information, are stored together with these individually assigned further items of output information. A comparator, which receives the respective default/succession input information as well as subsequently arriving input information initiates the immediate output of the relevant further output information in the case of agreement, but initiates the running of the systematic assignment procedure in the case of nonagreement.
