A process is described for treating or for renovating layers of insulating material, especially using asbestos, after the layer of insulating material has been impregnated with a solution of a self-curing and coated material and then the bonding agents bonded through the layer of insulating material to the substrate, which bonding agents extend as far as the surface of the layer of insulating material and to which a tensioning sheet of a vapour- and gas-permeable material is fastened. The bonding agents are preferably arranged in a certain grid size and the tensioning sheet is made of a nonwoven fabric-like plastic.
