Process for consolidating clay-containing colloid materials

The consolidation of clay-containing colloid materials in substantially non-settling aqueous sludge media to give a firm, stable matrix is achieved by mixing this sludge with a hydratable calcium sulphate and hydrating the mixture to give a matted, load-bearing matrix. The process is particularly suitable for compacting phosphate-containing loam sludges with hydratable calcium sulphate which is prepared from the waste phosphate gypsum also produced.
