PURPOSE:To obtain inexpensively an aromatic polyester excellent in heat resistance, etc., by conducting the interfacial polycondensation of an organic solvent solution of terephthaloyl dichloride, etc., with an aqueous alkaline solution of a phenolphthalein in the presence of a specified catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The purpose aromatic polyester is obtained by conducting the interfacial polycondensation of an organic solvent solution of terephthaloyl or/ and isophthaloyl dichloride with an aqueous alkaline solution of a compound of formula I (wherein R<1>-R<12> are each H, halogen, or hydrocarbyl) in the presence of a catalyst comprising a compound of formula II (wherein R<14> is alkyl, benzyl, or phenyl and X<1> is hydroxyl or halogen). The polyester thus produced has a structural unit of formula III (wherein R<13> is phenylene) and has a reduced viscosity, as determined in a solution in a 1:1 (weight ratio) phenol/tetrachloroethane mixture in a concentration of 1g/dl at 30 deg.C, of 1.5dl/g or above.
