PURPOSE:To reduce the size of a device by providing a setting circuit which sets a preset value after substitution as a new preset value by the setting touch operation of a preset switch after a series of substituting operations for the display preset value. CONSTITUTION:The amount of displacement of a measuring element 12 is detected by using a known means such as an optical or magnetic detector or variable resistor and electric signal pulses corresponding to the detected amount are outputted by an encoder 22. A measurement reference value corresponding to a body 10 to be measured is set previously as a preset value in the preset memory 26 of a presetting device 28. The preset value and electric signal pulses outputted by the encoder 22 are counted by a counting circuit 24 to display the measured value of the body 10 digitally on a display device 14 on the basis of the counted values.
