PURPOSE:The titled covering material having high curing rate, improved toughness and adhesivity to primarily coated layer, consisting of a compound containing a melamine ring and a (meth)acrylic group in the molecule, and an acrylic oligomer or monomer. CONSTITUTION:A methylol melamine(derivative) shown by the formula I (3 or more of R1-6 are CH3OR and the other are H; R is H, <=4C alkyl) condensed with a hydroxyalkyl(meth)acrylic ester shown by the formula II in the presence of an acidic catalyst, to give a compound (A) having a melamine ring and a (meth)acrylic group in the molecule. 100pts.wt. mixture of 5-80wt% component A and (B) 95-20wt. acrylic oligomer having 100-50,000 average molecular weight or acrylic monomer [e.g., ethylene glycol di(meth)acrylate] is blended with 0.1-10pts.wt. photopolymerization initiator (e.g., benzophenone) to give a covering material. The covering material is applied to the surface of optical fiber which is coated primarily, and is irradiated with radiation and cured.
