PURPOSE:To eliminate a failure in operation and specify the line of a character to be read by adding codes which specify character entry areas sectioned in the movement direction of a recording medium thereto, and performing character read control according to the codes. CONSTITUTION:A form B is sent by a motor 11 as shown by a white-blanked arrow and a read head 12 arranged in its movement areas reads characters, line by line. Codes C which each specify the character entry area of one line are printed at the right end of the form B. A character recognition part 14 performs character recognition by input data from respective read units 121, etc., and performs readout control on the basis of a signal from a photosensor 12a, etc. A line specifying code Cl is also detected by photosensors 12b-12e and read in the character recognition part 14 to specify which line characters are read on. The form is fed continuously until the photosensor 12a detects a strobe code Cs next.
