PURPOSE:A liquid crystal composition, obtained by incorporating 5 or more compounds selected from five kinds of compound groups of specific ester based compounds, phenylcyclohexane compounds, etc., and having a wide liquid crystal temperature range, little change of threshold voltages and improved response characteristics. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal composition, obtained by incorporating at least one or more compounds selected from (A) the first compound group of formula I and II, (B) the second compound group of formulas III and IV, (C) the third compound group of formulasV-VII, (D) the fourth compound group of formulas VIII-X and (E) the fifth compound group of formula X I [R1-R19 are all straight chain; R is CnH2n+1 (n is an 1-7)]. The total content of the ester based compounds of the components (A) and (B) is preferably 20wt%. USE:A liquid crystal composition, having a positive dielectric anisotropy (DELTAepsilon), and used in twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal display devices capable of not only static driving but also multiplex driving.
