PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer having high quality, in high yield, without using molecular halogen, by halogenating an olefin polymer with a halogenation agent mixture composed of a hydrogen halide and a hypohalogenous acid derivative. CONSTITUTION:The objective polymer can be prepared by halogenating (A) an olefinic polymer with (B) a halogenation agent mixture consisting of (i) a hydrogen halide and (ii) a hypohalogenous acid derivative selected from hypohalogenous acid, its salt and its ester (preferably a combination of hydrogen chloride and a hypochlorous acid derivative). The amount of the component (ii) in the component (B) is preferably 0.3-100mol per 1mol of the component (i), and that of the component (B) is selected to give 0.1-100pts.wt. of the component (i) per 100pts.wt. of the component (A). EFFECT:There is little production of hydrogen halide as by-product.
