<p>The process permits the thermal treatment, i.e. heating to high temperatures, pyrolysis or gasification, of materials which carbonise at high temperatures, for example wood, pulp, household refuse, old tyres, plastic, tar sand, oil shale, etc., in an electric shaft furnace. It has not been possible to date to heat such material in electric shaft furnaces in which current is passed through the material in the furnace via electrodes, since such material does not conduct the electric current. In the process, the material is introduced from above into an electric shaft furnace and moves continuously downwards through the furnace so slowly that, owing to heat transfer from the hotter parts of the furnace, it carbonises to such an extent that it becomes electrically conductive, until it comes into contact with the electrode parts via which electric current is passed through the material. The sinking of the material introduced from above can be effected, for example, by removing corresponding amounts of solid material from the bottom of the furnace or by gasifying the material with steam. <IMAGE></p> |
