Process consisting in directing a noncontinuous incident luminous beam towards the surface of the charge, in successively closely examining separate points of the said surface so as to locate the point of incidence of the incident luminous beam, the direction of the latter being kept stationary at least until the time when its point of incidence on the charge is located, in determining the level of the said point of incidence by optical triangulation, in repeating these operations at a number of points of the surface of the charge and in deducing therefrom the topographic map of the charge.
