Summarising, the invention provides a process for producing comminutable coal, with reduction in the metal content represented in the coal by Si, Al, Ca, Na, K and Mg, the following being provided: contacting of a coal/water mixture in a weight ratio of approximately 4:1 to 1:6 in the presence of CO2 at pressures of approximately 100-1400 psi and at a minimum temperature of approximately 15 DEG C for a period of one or more hours to produce a treated coal/water mixture. In the process, the treated coal/water mixture has Ca and Mg values which are reduced by up to 78% as compared with the starting mixture, and the advantageous CO2 concentration is in the range of approximately 3-30 g/l. Below 5 g/l of CO2, only small effects are observed, and above 30 g/l no special advantages are obtained. The coal/water ratios in the range from 1:2 to 2:1 are particularly advantageous, and such ratios are compatible with applications of coal/water suspensions.
