PURPOSE:To attain high speed of line tracking processing by comparing the black width in horizontal direction with the black width in vertical direction and tracking a line based on the narrower width. CONSTITUTION:The length of black run in X direction and that of a black run in Y direction are compared and a tangential vector is formed on the basis of the narrow width. Then the shorter address is used as a tracking address. On the other hand, the tracking address is changed to measure the width of a picture data thereby applying decision whether the width is proper or not. That is, when the width is wider, it means that it is a branch point and when the width is narrower, it means that it is an end point. When the value is proper, the deviation between the center data value and the tangential vector calculated before is extracted and when the deviation is large, the point is processed as a curved point and when not, the tracking is continued further.
