PURPOSE:To obtain a room temperature shrinkable tube excellent in electrical properties and suitable for coating a direct contact portion of a wire cable or the like, by immersing a crosslinked polyolefin tube in a volatile organic solvent having a swelling action and expanding the tube in the radial direction. CONSTITUTION:A polyolefin such as polyethylene or ethylene/propylene copolymer is reacted, by heating, with an unsaturated silane (e.g., vinyltrimethoxysilane) in the presence of a radical generator. The obtained silyl-modified polyolefin is formed into a crosslinked polyolefin tube, for example, by filling a mold with the polyolefin and a silanol condensation catalyst under pressure, molding it into a desired form and effecting its water-crosslinking. This tube is immersed in a volatile organic solvent which can swell the crosslinked polyolefin (e.g., toluene or xylene) to expand the tube in the radial direction to obtain the purpose room temperature shrinkable tube. |
