NEW MATERIAL:The brominated p-phenylphenol of formula (Br is substituted to one or both aromatic nuclei; n is 1-8). EXAMPLE:Tetrabromo-p-phenylphenol. USE:Useful as a flame-retardant or its raw material. It imparts a synthetic resin with excellent flame-retardance, and has excellent compatibility with synthetic resins and solvents, weather resistance, heat resistance, etc. Furthermore, it has extremely low migration tendency in synthetic resins, and is free of undesirable effect to the molding process of a synthetic resin and the mechanical and electrical properties of the molded article. PREPARATION:The compound of formula can be produced by adding p-phenylphenol and anhydrous aluminum chloride catalyst to a solvent comprising methylene bromide, and adding bromine dropwise to the mixture at room temperature.
