PURPOSE:To obtain more porous activated active carbon having a large specific surface area, by using a steam generator having a liquid wicking material in generating steam gas to be supplied to an activating furnace in the gas activation method. CONSTITUTION:Water is stored from an introductory pipe 7 into a chamber 4 of a steam generating vessel 1 divided into two chambers of a vaporization chamber 3 and a liquid storage chamber 4 with a heat insulation separation plate 2, and then sucked through a liquid wicking material 10, having capillarity, and dipped partially in the water to reach a vaporization part 16, covering a heating element 13 in the chamber 3, and having capillarity. The water is supplied with heat from the heating element 13 to exchange heat. An inert gas, e.g. Ar, is introduced from an inlet 5 into the chamber 3, and steam generated from the vaporization part 16 is accelerated and mixed to form a mixed gas of the steam and the gas, which is led from the steam generating vessel 1 through an outlet 6 to the interior of an activating furnace body 17 of active carbon. Thus, the necessary amount of steam can be efficiently and continuously generated in a short time.
