PURPOSE:To obtain a surface protective layer showing sufficient abrasion resistance and an improved running stabilizing effect by forming the protective layer contg. an organic sulfur compd. on the magnetic metallic thin film. CONSTITUTION:An organic sulfur compd. having specified structure is coated along with a binder to obtain a surface protective layer. An unsaturated sulfide, a cyclic sulfide, an epithio compd., or a diepithio compd. among others are preferably used as the organic sulfur compd. A thermoplastic or a thermosetting resin which is commonly used for forming the magnetic layer of a coating-type magnetic recording medium such as a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer or its partially saponified substance, a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetatemaleic acid copolymer, nitrocellulose, a polyurethane elastomer, a polyester resin, an epoxy resin, and an acrylic resin is used for forming the surface protective layer. Namely, about 1-30pts. organic sulfur compd. is added to 100pts. binder consisting of a mixture of one or >=2 kinds among said resins and coated along with a suitable solvent so a ferromagnetic metallic thin film to obtain the surface protective layer. The thickness of the surface protective layer is preferably regulated to about 0.1-0.5mum, for example.
