PURPOSE:To utilize a suitable guide picture having a lot of information quantity by a limited capacity by seeing a display state of a retrieval time, advancing a processing of magnification and reduction, and cutting and synthesis, etc. in accordance with a prescribed rule, and generating the guide picture. CONSTITUTION:Immediately after generation of a guide picture has been started, an original picture 19 is further reduced and a picture placed within a range of a frame 21 is displayed. The original picture is magnified to a range in which a character can be read, and thereafter, the original picture is moved by depressing a moving key so that the part to be registered is positioned in a frame 20. This part is registered as a part of the guide picture first by designating y a cursor the upper left and the lower right points of an area to be registered. Thereafter, in the same way, in case of magnification and reduction, movement, and a picture consisting of plural pages, one guide picture is generated by repeating a depression of a page turning key and a selection of the area.
