PURPOSE:To erase only the range having an erasing width with high precision by simple control by moving a light shielding plate with a pulse motor to control the irradiation range of an erasing lamp. CONSTITUTION:A light shielding plate 21 which can be moved in the breadthwise direction of drum 7 is provided between an erasing lamp 20 and the photosensitive drum 7. If a width l2 of a reduced image I on the photosensitive drum 7 is larger than a length l3 of a transfer paper 16, the light shielding plate 21 is moved by driving the pulse motor to shield the image I up to its edges from light. Consequently, a part on the outside of the image width l2 is erased. If the width l2 of the image is smaller than the width l3 of the transfer paper, the light shielding plate 21 is moved to shield the transfer paper 16 up to the edge in the side opposite to a reference end B from light. Consequently, a part on the outside of the range of the width of the transfer paper 16 is erased. Therefore, only the erasing range is irradiated selectively and is destaticized while lighting always the lamp 20.
