PURPOSE:To attain the extraction of a feature parameter by prolonging a pattern picture element constituting, e.g., a short line to a blank region and changing a blank picture element into a pattern picture element so as to divide a consecutive blank region into two by the line. CONSTITUTION:The feature patterns of PA1-PA8 are utilized among patterns constituted with 3X3 picture element matrixes. A mark * indicates either a black picture element or a white picture element and a mark (a) indicates s picture element which is either an end point or a black picture element. In taking notice to the 3X3 matrix consisting of the white picture element and picture elements existing therearound, whether the pattern is coincident with the pattern A or the pattern B is checked. When the pattern is coincident with the group A and not with the group B, a numeric code given to a noted picture element is changed into an alphabetical code given to the black picture element. Thus, the data is divided into two parts and a preferable feature parameter is extracted.
