PURPOSE:To reduce a device at its size and to speed up reading by adopting a cylindrical scanning system and using plural reading heads. CONSTITUTION:When a drum 10 is rotated, laser light 26a from a reading head 24a scans (main scanning) on the surface of a sheet 12 in the peripheral direction, and in accordance with the movement of the reading head 24a, a main scanning line due to the laser light 26a is moved (sub-scanning) on the sheet 12 in the drum shaft direction. Accelerated phosphorescent light 27 emitted from th sheet 12 by the sub-scanning is detected by a photodetecting element 28 and its electric output signal 29 is inputted to a picture information reading circuit 30. The operation is executed simultaneously in other three reading heads 24b- 24d. The whole surface of the sheet 12 is read out by moving a head block 18 only by a distance of 1/4 the width of a picture formation area, so that the reading is speeded up and the device can be reduced at its size by the rotary scanning system.
