PURPOSE:To make the water content of a dehydrated cake constant, by attaching an apparatus for detecting the properties of a precipitate to a differential speed machine pulley and making it possible to control the differential of the rotary cylinder and screw conveyor of a decanter type centrifugal dehydrator on the basis of the detection value of said apparatus. CONSTITUTION:Sludge is supplied in the rotary cylinder 6 of a decanter type centrifugal dehydrator having a screw conveyor 5 mounted therein from a feed tube 10 and the separated clarified liquid is discharged from an outlet 13. On the other hand, the precipitate is dehydrated by the conveyor 5 rotated by a differential speed machine pulley 1 and discharged from an outlet 8. The torque generated at this time is measured by the shaft of the probe 1 provided to the leading end of a gear box 2 and the magnitude of torque having linear relation to the water content of a dehydrated cake is detected while the pulley 1 receives differential control by the output of the detection value.
