PURPOSE:To obtain carbon yarn and graphite yarn having high strength and high modulus of elasticity efficiently, by subjecting optically anisotropic carbonaceous yarn to infusible treatment while winding it round a bobbin, heat- treating it primarily, then heat-treating it secondarily. CONSTITUTION:Optically anisotropic carbonaceous pitch is subjected to melt spinning, and spun pitch yarn is wound round a permeable bobbin made of stainless steel, etc. Then, while being wound round the bobbin, the yarn is subjected to infusible treatment in an oxidizing atmosphere by raising temperature to 150-400 deg.C stepwise or gradually. The yarn is heat-treated primarily at <=690 deg.C, preferably at 400-690 deg.C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere, then sent to an inert gas atmosphere of argon gas, etc. at >=1,000 deg.C to carry out secondary heat treatment, and the yarn is wound round a winder, to give the desired yarn.
