PURPOSE:To save labor and improve remarkably the operating efficiency, by removing the root and leaf tip parts and periderm which are unnecessary parts of a Welsh onion automatically and continuously while requiring almost no handling. CONSTITUTION:An apparatus for handling a Welsh onion 7 having a cutter 12 for cutting the root and leaf tip parts of the Welsh oinon 7 provided on both sides of the middle position of a conveyor 5 for continuously conveying the Welsh onion 7 intermittently at a required interval and pressing mechanisms 24 and 27 for pressing the leaf part of the Welsh oinon 7 at the stop of the conveyor 5 and releasing the pressing on conveying of the conveyor 5 provided in front of the conveyor 5. A jet peeling mechanism 18 for reciprocating in the longitudinal direction of the Welsh onion 7 at the stop of the conveyor 5 and jetting pressurized air on the top of the Welsh onion 7 on reciprocation from the leaf part to the root part is provided. The apparatus is capable of removing the root and leaf tip parts and periderm which are unnecessary parts automatically and continuously while requiring almost no handly by hands and labor can be saved with remarkably improved operating efficiency.
