PURPOSE:To obtain the titled magnetic recording medium having satisfactory magnetic head self-cleaning property and excellent electromagnetic transducing characteristic and abrasion resistance by providing a magnetic recording layer contg. alumina having alpha-phase content in a specified range on a nonmagnetic supporting body. CONSTITUTION:1-10pts.wt. alumina contg. >=75wt% and <=90wt% alpha-phase, having high polishing force, and having preferably >=0.1mu and <=1mu mean particle diameter is added to 100pts.wt. magnetic powder to obtain a paint for forming a coating type magnetic recording layer. The paint is coated on a supporting body of polyester film, and dried by impressing a magnetic field immediately before the drying, and orienting the magnetic field. After drying, the smoothness is improved by a supercalender roll, and the supporting body is optionally backcoated. The magnetic tape, magnetic sheet, and magnetic cards havig excellent electromagnetic transducing characteristic and abrasion resistance and suitable for videos is obtained in this way.
