PURPOSE:To decrease the number of signal lines between a computer mainframe and a keyboard unit separated from it by providing keys to both, and transferring data selectively. CONSTITUTION:The computer mainframe 1 has a specific number of keys 2 and a display part 3 made of liquid crystal cells, etc., and is equipped with the keyboard unit 4 which is detachable from the mainframe 1 and connected by a cable 7 through a connector 6. This keyboard unit 4 has plural keys 5 and is equipped with a CPU for reading input states of said keys 2 and keys 5. Consequently, it is decided whether data is transferred between the mainframe and keyboard 4 or not according to whether the computer mainframe 1 requests transmission or not or whether there is data in the key buffer of the keyboard unit 4, and a key strobe signal is transmitted to the mainframe side 1 unless both are interfaced with each other.
