PURPOSE:To obtain a novel latex of rod-shaped polymer, having large surface area and strong thixotropic property, and useful as a paint, etc., by solubilizing a polymerizable monomer in a rod-shaped micelle, and polymerizing the monomer keeping the structure of the rod-shaped micelle. CONSTITUTION:A polymerizable monomer such as vinyl monomer, acrylic monomer, etc. is solubilized in a rod-shaped micelle, and polymerized keeping the structure of the rod-shaped micelle to obtain a rod-shaped polymer latex having an aspect ratio of >=3 and a thixotropic index eta3/eta30 (eta3 and eta30 are the viscosity values measured by the B-type viscometer at 3rpm and 30rpm, respectively) of >=1.5 as 15wt% aqueous dispersion. Preferably, the polymerizable monomer is solubilized in an aqueous solution of a surfactant having a dynamic modulus of >=0.01dyne/cm<2> at a vibration frequency of 0.05-1.0Hz, and the polymerization is started and continued while adding the polymerizable monomer at a rate to keep the dynamic modulus of the above aqueous solution within the aforementioned range.
