PURPOSE:To obtain an excellent reproduced image without waving change of grating pattern of a received picture by designing the system that the phase relation between an original reading picture signal and a pseudo intermediate tone generating signal is kept to a prescribed relation independently of the picture signal transmission time. CONSTITUTION:Picture information of original one line is inputted to an analog- digital converter 20 in Fig. 5 during a charge read period p2 of a photoelectric converting element 15 and converted into a digital signal. The relation of phase between a read picture signal (q) inputted to a read only memory 21 from the analog-digital converter 20 and a pseudo intermediate tone generation signal (r) inputted from a counter 27 to the said read only memory 21 is kept to a predetermined relation independently of fluctuation of a transmission period C2. That is, the relation of phase between the read signal (q) and the pseudo intermediate tone generating signal (r) is shifted for the phase by 180 deg. at a line started from times t1, t3 and a line started from times t2 and t4 and this relation is independing of the transmission period C2. Thus, an excellent intermediate tone picture is reproduced.
