A slide 1 is generally rectangular and planar and has opposed longitudinal edges or parts 2 which are made from one, hardenable, stainless steel, and a body or remaining part 3 made from a relatively unhardenable, or soft, stainless steel. The whole slide 1 is precision ground and is corrosion resistant. The edges 2 are of V-shape the inclined surfaces 4 of the Vees being at 90 DEG . The precision grinding provides a parallelism of 0.013 mm per metre across the V-edges 4. The edges 2 are formed of a stainless steel hardened up to 58 Rockwell "C". The stainless steel for the edges 2 has the composition (by wt%) 0.95-1.20 C, 1.0 Si, 1.0 Mn, 16-18 Cr, 0.75 Mo, 0.030S and 0.040 P. The soft stainless steel of the body or part 3 has the composition (by wt%) 0.12 Max C, 1.0 Max Si, Mn 1.00, 1.00 Ni, 12-14 Cr, 0.045S and 0.045 P.
