PURPOSE:To detect many information such as a kind of a tape, a length of the tape, A and B faces, etc. by providing plural parts to be detected and an engaging recessed part being adjacent to said part, on one side face of a tape cassette. CONSTITUTION:On the back of the opposite side to the inserting side of a magnetic head 15, a pair each of erroneous erasion preventive claws 12 and engaging recessed parts 13 for holding a cassette are provided so as to extend over an upper part 11a and a lower part 11b of a cassette half, and the recessed part 13 is a circular arc-shaped cavity. Also plural detecting holes 14 are arranged and provided on one straight line, keeping an up-down symmetrical relation on the upper part 11a and the lower part 11b. When the detecting holes are placed in this way, the cassette half can be used in the same way even if it is turned inside out, also can be placed in a large number, and the shape is a small hole but its depth can be made large, therefore, whether it exists or not can be detected exactly by a lead switch, etc.
