Apparatus for the catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides, in particular in the course of the conversion of fossil fuels, in which the gas to be purified flows through a reactor with addition of a reducing agent, in which reactor is arranged a porous oxidic support material having a catalytically active metal coating, the active metal coating containing lanthanum and cobalt as active metal components, the coating being formed by impregnation of the support body with a solution of readily thermally decomposable lanthanum salts and cobalt salts and subsequent firing and the metal coating containing 1 part of cobalt and 1-3 parts, preferably 2 parts, of lanthanum, and - based on the sum of these materials - 2 to 20% by mass of cerium.
