PURPOSE:To provide a lightweight porous carbonaceous sintered body having a specified pore volume and suitable for use as a porous electrode for a fuel cell, a catalyst carrier, a filter for separating a substance or the like. CONSTITUTION:This porous carbonaceous sintered body has 0.2-1.4cc/g pore volume measured by a mercury injecting method. The sintered body is formed by sintering a carbonaceous starting material such as carbon black by heating at 1,000-3,000 deg.C in vacuum or an inert atmosphere under about 100-1,000kg/cm<2> pressure with a hot press using a high frequency induction heating system or the like. The starting material may be mixed with a binder and additives before the sintering, as necessary.
