<p>In order to authenticate a document, it is encoded (4) in a transmitting unit by inscribing an identifying code and an authentication code on it. The document encoded in this way is read (5) and the result of the reading is transformed into a digital stream, which is itself then transformed into a coded stream (12) transmitted to a central system (1) for memorisation.
