PURPOSE:To convert the density of an original into the recording density in response to the designated characteristic without deteriorating the color balance, by obtaining the corrected degree of density corresponding to a tone curve designated by a density signal, and adding said density corrected degree to each density signal to perform the correction of density. CONSTITUTION:A correspondence table of a luminance signal and density degree of an original is derived previously and experimentally and stored to a density table 1. Then an input original density signal DIN corresponding to a luminance signal can be outputted out of the table 1. The density correction degree D is calculated as DELTAD=DOUT-DIN from the relation between the signal DIN and the output density DOUT shown in a figure (a). This amount DELTAD is obtained with all signals DIN. A table of density correction degrees shown in a figure (b) is stored to a density correction table 2 by means of said DELTAD. Then the amount DELTAD corresponding to the signal DIN is outputted from the density correction degree table corresponding to a designated tone curve (conversion curve).
