PURPOSE:To obtain an optical reader which can read even color bar codes by sharing a binary coding circuit that is used to read characters and bar codes. CONSTITUTION:A pattern projected to a vertical axis is obtained after an OR is obtained with ''blacks'' between columns for each row. Then the number N of rows where ''blacks'' are continuous is obtained. A deciding circuit 14 decides characters with l<=N<=m and then bar codes with N>=n, respectively. The result of the decision of the circuit 14 is supplied to a binary coding circuit 13. The circuit 13 changes the conditions according to the characters or bar codes and performs the subsequent binary coding operations. The different threshold values are used to read the characters or bar codes, and the handling method of a drop-out color is also changed. In such a way, a reading method of color bar codes is obtained.
