PURPOSE:To read out precisely many different characters with simple constitution by changing the height of a specific divided part of a character on the surface of a substance from other parts, and irradiating light to these parts to detect the reflected light. CONSTITUTION:A fixed area on the surface of a substance on which a character is to be displayed is divided and a specific divided part out of respective divided parts a-g is lowered at its height as compared to other divided parts. Optical distance sensors 10-16 are arranged over respective divided parts a-g and outputs from these sensors 10-16 are compared with a prescribed level by comparators 23-29 and the compared results are inputted to a character decision circuit 33 through a gate circuit 30. The gate circuit 30 is controlled by a reading signal outputted from a timing signal generating circuit 32.
