PURPOSE:To obtain carbon yarn having high strength, high elasticity, producing a small amount of fluff, by carbonizing in the previous stage flame-resistant yarn with specific low fiber density, under specific conditions, which is obtained from a precursor of acrylic yarn, followed by carbonizing it at a higher temperature. CONSTITUTION:A precursor of acrylic yarn is subjected to flame-resistant treatment in an oxidizing atmosphere usually at 180-450 deg.C and its density becomes 1.26-1.36g/cc. Then, it is heat-treated in an inert atmosphere at 300-800 deg.C under 3-30% elongation, to carry out a previous stage carbonization reaction. In the operation, a rate of heating from 350 to 450 deg.C is kept at 10-100 deg.C/min. Then, the yarn is further carbonized at >=1,000 deg.C, to give the aimed carbon yarn.
