PURPOSE:To convert a document having large size photoelectrically with high resolution by reciprocating a substrate on which photodetecting elements corresponding to one over an integer number of the number of necessary picture elements are bonded and obtaining necessary resolution. CONSTITUTION:Tapes are formed in a shift register 203 in every m stages and the outputs P1-Pn of respective photodetectors 102 are applied to respective taps. A driving part 201 reciprocates the substrate 101 in the arrow 205 direction with amplitude larger than a pitch mr when the resolution of the photodetectors 102 is (r). A position detecting part 202 detects the position (x) of the substrate 101 and applies the position (x) to a timing control part 204. The control part 204 applies a clock signal t1 to the register 203 for every passage of the position (x) through sampling points arrayed at equal intervals corresponding to the resolution (r).
