PURPOSE:To improve the S/N and the sensitivity of a camera by reading out image pickup information from a light receiving means in every prescribed read area and changing the read area in response to the motion of a picture. CONSTITUTION:The size of a scanning electron beam is controlled in accordance with the motion of the picture. That is, the beam is spread to a size corresponding to 4 picture elements if the picture to be picked up is an animation. If the picture to be picked up is still, the size of the beam is set to a value corresponding to one picture element. The size of the beam is changed in accordance with the motion of the picture in this manner, thereby improving the S/N of signals obtained from an image pickup device.
