PURPOSE:In reacting an aniline with ethylene glycol, to obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for amino acids such as tryptophan, etc. in high yield without using a carrier gas, by using a catalyst containing a specific compound as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An aniline is reacted with ethylene glycol in a ratio of preferably 1mol aniline to 0.01-5mol, preferably 0.05-2mol ethylene glycol, by the use of a catalyst containing cadmium bromide as a catalyst, to give the aimed compound. Cadmium bromide or a combination of cadmium bromide and another compound is directly used as the catalyst, or supported on a carrier and used. The reaction can be carried out in any of gaseous phase, liquid phase, and gas- liquid mixed phase. For example, in the case of the liquid reaction, an amount of the catalyst used is preferably 0.001-0.1mol based on 1mol aniline.
