PURPOSE:To shorten the transmission time by converting and compressing the line density of picture data of one set of read originals on the basis of the indication of continuous reading of plural originals to transmit this data as one original. CONSTITUTION:A mechanical control part 12 starts feeding an original 1 in a reading part 13, and the front end of the fed original 1 is detected by a sensor S1 to output a signal to the control part 12, and the original number is counted. The original 1 is fed in accordance with a designated line density by a pulse motor M1, and the original is read by scanning due to an image sensor 33. The front end of the first original 1 is detected by a sensor S2, and reading by the image sensor 33 is started, and reading of the second original is indicated when the rear end of the original and the front end of the next original are detected. Continuous read due to the sensor 2 is continued until the counted value based on detection of the sensor S1 reaches a designated number and reading by the sensor 33 is terminated when the rear end of the last page is detected by the sensor S2.
