PURPOSE:To utilize a common file resource effectively by transmitting file size specifying data from a host computer or work stations prior to data transfer, and only when the capacity of a common file is secured, transferring data. CONSTITUTION:A common file control device 12 is connected to the host computer 11 and work stations 14-17 and the device 12 is constituted by connecting a parameter checking part 22 and a file access part 23 between a command recognition part 21 and a response part 24. File size specifying data are informed from the computer 11 or the work stations 14-17 to the device 12 as a command at first and then the command is checked by the recognition part 21. At the processing of a file access system, data are read/written from/in a common file 18 by the access part 23 and transmitted to a command transmitting source through the response part 24. At the processing of inquiry, the data size and the residual size are checked by the checking part 22, and only when the capacity of the fire can be secured, a normal response is returned.
