NEW MATERIAL:The ester compound of formula I (R<1> is C1-12 alkyl or alkoxy; R<2> is C1-12 alkyl, alkoxy, F, Cl, Br or CN; A<1> is group of formula II or formula III; A<2> is group of formula IV, formula V, etc.). EXAMPLE:trans-4-(trans-4-Propylcyclohexyl) cyclohexylemthyl trans-4-propylcyclo hexylacetate. USE:Useful as a component of liquid crystal composition. It cannot be used singly in a conventional display element, however, it has excellent compatibility with other P type or N type liquid crystal and gives a liquid crystal composition having wider liquid crystal temperature range and suitable for various liquid crystal display elements when mixed with a Schiff base-type or azoxy-type liquid crystal composition. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared by reacting the acid chloride of formula A with the alcohol derivative of formula B in the presence of pyridine.
