PURPOSE:To prevent erroneous operation and enhance efficiency of use by dividing a reference pattern into partial groups, making check judging of maximum degree of resemblance in partial groups and maximum degree of resemblance of total reference pattern, and giving an alarm when contradiction occurred. CONSTITUTION:The reference patterns are sent to a matching section 50 successively and the degree of resemblance between each and an inputted pattern is calculated. The degree of resemblance is sent to a judging section 80. The degree of resemblance is compared only on the reference pattern of partial group designated by a partial group designating section 10, and maximum degree of resemblance is selected and corresponding name of character becomes the result of recognition. On the other hand, the degree of recognition is sent also to a check judging section 81 for mutual comparison, and maximum degree of resemblance in the total reference patterns is selected. The two degrees of resemblance are sent to a comparing section 90 and checked for contradiction. When a contradiction is detected, an alarm is sounded on designation of partial group from an error alarm generating section 100.
