PURPOSE:To enable the use of a crucible for a long period without causing the corrosion of the crucible, and to obtain a colorless single crystal even by the treatment in air, by carrying out the growth of a potassium tantalate niobate single crystal from a molten mixture of potassium tantalate and potassium niobate using a crucible made of ZrB2. CONSTITUTION:Potassium tantalate and potassium niobate are melted and mixed in a crucible made of ZrB2, and the objective potassium tantalate niobate single crystal is prepared from the molten mixture. A single crystal free from bluish black color can be prepared even in a non-reducing atmosphere, e.g. in air, in contrast to the conventional process using an indium crucible for which the operation in an inert atmosphere is inevitable. Furthermore, the corrosion of the crucible is negligible and the crucible can be used for a long period.
