PURPOSE:To set automatically a transmission speed with the depressing time of a start key by using the start key also as a transmission time setting key. CONSTITUTION:A start switch 51 also serves as a transmission speed setting switch, and its depressing time is counted by a counter equipped at the side nof a main control circuit 60. When the depressing time is divided into plural stages, the transmission speed is set in accordance with the stage and displayed on a display device 52. The depressing time is discriminated by four stages from T1 to T4, for instance, and the transmission sequence is started at 9,600bps, which corresponds to below the T1, and at 7,200bps, below the T2, at 4,800bps, below the T3 and 2,400bps, above the T3, respectively. Simultaneously the transmission speed is displayed in units of bps on the display device 52. On the other hand, the reception side detects a ring and completes the preparation of an action, transmits a CED signal to the transmission side and starts the reception sequence.
