PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate of antibacterial agent, easily, in high yield, by reacting a substituted benzene with 2- alkoxymethylene-3,3-dialkoxypropanenitrile in the presence of an inorganic acid. CONSTITUTION:The 2'-dialkoxymethylcinnamonitrile of formula III can be produced by reacting the substituted benzene of formula I (R<1> and R<2> are lower alkyl or alkylene which may together form a 5-8-membered heterocyclic group; R<3> is H or lower alkyl) (e.g. 3,4-dimethyoxytoluene) with the 2- alkoxymethylene-3,3-dialkoxypropanenitrile of formula II (R<4>-R<6> are lower alkyl) in the presence of an inorganic acid (e.g. polyphosphoric acid, pyrophosphoric acid, etc.).
